POST-DOCTORAL AND PRE-DOCTORAL POSITIONS IN PLASMA
ASTROPHYSICS
In the framework of a new European Research Training
Network (PLATON) applications are invited for predoc
and postdoc positions at several European Institutes
(see below for the details of the network). At
Ruhr-Universität Bochum one predoc position and one
postdoc position is available for 1-2 years. The salary is paid
according to BAT (BAT 2a/2 for the predoc, BAT 2a for the postdoc).
The research topics are 3-d magnetic reconnection
and semikinetic models of the solar wind.
Applicants must be aged 35 or less and must be nationals
of an EU member state or an Associated
State , or must have resided in the Community for at least five
years prior to their appointment. They must not be Germans and must
not have carried out their normal activities in Germany for more
than 12 months of the 24 months prior to the appointment.
Applications for Ruhr-Universität Bochum should be send to
the network coordinator (details and address see below) and a copy
to:

European Research Training Network PLATON
(Plasma Astrophysics: Theory, Observations and Numerics of Heating,
Flares and Winds)
As part of its current Fifth Framework Programme the European
Commission will provide funding for a Research Training Network
(RTN) dedicated to study the physics of coronal heating, flares and
winds. Over a period of four years (likely start date 1 July 2000),
the network will link the following eight institutions:
- School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of St.
Andrews, UK (coordinating institute).
- Institute for Plasmaphysics, FOM, Nieuwegein, Netherlands.
- Center for Plasma Astrophysics, KU Leuven, Belgium.
- Observatoire Astronomique, University of Strasbourg,
France.
- Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Tenerife, Spain.
- Theoretische Physik IV, Ruhr-University Bochum,
Germany.
- Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam, Germany.
- Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, FORTH, Heraklion,
Crete, Greece.
The research topics addressed by the network will be the physics of
coronal heating, flares and winds. The network will emphasize
theoretical work, but observational aspects will also be
considered.
The network will offer both post-doctoral and pre-doctoral (PhD)
positions. It is anticipated that about 4 post-doctoral and 5
pre-doctoral positions will become available by the end of
2000/beginning of 2001.
Postdocs will usually be employed by the network for a period of
two years. Interested candidates will be encouraged to work at more
than one network institute during that period of time (a
contribution to travel and relocation costs will be provided by the
network).
The pre-doctoral positions will usually provide funding for PhD
students who want to carry out a part of their PhD work at one or
more of the network institutes for periods of 3 months to 1 year.
In exceptional cases, funding for obtaining a PhD (3 years) at one
of the network institutes will also be considered.
Post-doctoral salaries and pre-doctoral fellowships at each
institution will be paid in accordance with the local regulations
for these positions.
Further positions will become available at later stages of the
network project and will be advertised at the appropriate time.
According to the rules of the Research Training Network
Programme, applicants must meet the following conditions:
Age: They must be aged 35 or less at the time of their
appointment. An exemption to this age limit will be made for
compulsory military service or childcare.
Nationality: Applicants must be nationals of an EU member
state or an Associated
State or must have resided in the Community for at least
five years prior to their appointment.
Mobility: They must not be nationals of the state in
which they will be appointed and must not have carried out their
normal activities in that state for more than 12 months of the 24
months prior to the appointment.
Applicants for the postdoctoral positions should send a CV, a
publication list, the names and contact information for two people
familiar with your work, and a cover letter describing your present
work and near-term goals. They should also indicate at which
network institutes they would prefer/would be willing to work.
For the predoctoral positions, a CV and the name and contact
information of one reference will suffice. They should also
indicate at which network institutes they would prefer/would be
willing to work.
Applications by female researchers are particularly welcome.
Applications should be send to the network coordinator at the
following address:
Thomas Neukirch
School of Mathematics and Statistics
University of St. Andrews
St. Andrews KY16 9SS
United Kingdom
email: thomas@mcs.st-and.ac.uk
phone: +44 1334 463713
fax : +44 1334 463748
We will begin to evaluate applications on September 1st 2000,
but the call remains open until all positions are filled. Informal
enquiries about any aspect of the network are welcome and should be
addressed to the network coordinator (see contact information
above).
Further details concerning the network are available at PLATON.
